- What is Adobe PDF?
- Portable Document Format (PDF) is file format invented by Adobe.
- Why a PDF file?
- The original document may have been created with Microsoft Word, Excel or perhaps Adobe Illustrator. It included specific fonts, graphics, and a creative design layout. We don't want to ask everyone to purchase Microsoft Word, Excel or perhaps Adobe Illustrator just so they can open the original document. Additionally, we can't convert the original document into a web page without loosing much of the original design. So we convert the original document into a PDF file. This allows everyone to easily and reliably view and print the document exactly as it was designed, regardless of their operating system and fonts available.
PDF files sometimes contain various levels of security to protect the author's intellectual property. The file may prompt you for a password before you can open it. Or it may disallow alterations, copying, or printing.

- Saving a PDF file:
On a web page, there will be an icon:
or a link to access your PDF. Usually, when you to click this, your browser will open the PDF within the browser window. Then when you close the browser, the PDF is gone. Instead, you could save the PDF on your computer then go to where you just saved that PDF and open it. Then you could also send it to someone as an email attachment. To download a PDF file from a link...
- On a Mac:
- Control-click the link to a PDF file, and choose Download Link To Disk from the context menu.
